Just as an aside, but relevant to the topic of online gaming/addiction, I found this brief review of a new film at http://brainwashed.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6853&Itemid=1
that covers that very topic. Sounds like it probably has a very limited theatrical release, but anyone who had an interest in the topic might want to have a look.

i've seen many get into these MMOs and become addictive. some of my friends for months would not go out becasue they had to get to the next level of WOW. come on, really... it gets to a point where it becomes a problem. some people think that it is real. they bring what they see in the game, into the real world. i have seen murders that have shown the killer dressed up as a Night Elf and he accidently impailed his friend because he thought that his shield was gonna block it. we see this more and more now because instead of going out and socializing, these people feel better and more confident in communicating through the internet, i guess to deal better with rejection. if a girl rejects you in an MMO, you could just go up to her and kill her virtually just like she killed your love.
I really don't see the attraction to staying inside and playing games on a computer all day. While I enjoy video games from time to time, I just couldn't see myself ignoring life to play games. It's kind of scary that some of these folks lose touch with reality and lack social skills due to hours upon hours of playing these games. However, if the games do not interfere with socialization, and are just a way to relax, then I guess I don't see a problem with them. What do ya want from me, I grew up in the time of Atari, and that was considered top of the line, so I guess the technology wasn't present for me to get addicted at a younger age, and I never explored much after nintendo game cube, which is yes, what I still have in my house.

I don't even know how people find games like these fun. If I play video games, I like to play sports or shooting games. Too many people get too into dumb games like this and it ends up taking over their lives. I even saw a guy on the show Intervention who had this same problem and even after the intervention, he refused to recognize his problem. It is amazing something like this can happen to people, but as even more technology comes out, the problem will continue and will probably worsen.
This is interesting to see how some people get so addicted to games because they are so popular and widely played. How do we create boundaries for seemingly harmless games which are minimally regulated. I never understood the appeal of video games, but I have many friends who cant get away from games, or they play instead of studying, etc. Obviously as technology continues to control our lives there will be more studies done on what causes these gaming addictions... i am interested to read the results.

I have been a fan of RPGs my entire life, playing at least 2-3 new ones a year. That was until world of warcraft hit the scene and basically for filled all my fantasy needs in one great package. While i can't say that i am addicted to the game, i could easily how a person could become so. In fact i have two really close friends who literally set aside around 20 hours a week to play the game. One of them over the course of 3 years has gone from an outgoing kid to a hermit who has trouble being in social settings. He rarely hangs out anymore and finds that his community within the world of warcraft are closer to him than his real life buddies. Crazy.
